My Job…in Oklahoma.

Ok, so Fate turns, and twists, and throws you into the weirdest places.

After we were in Texas for about 8 days, my dad came down to pick us up and take us up north to Oklahoma to spend a few days with him. He’s been working there as a project manager for the construction of four motels in Oklahoma City. Apparently the city is going to become some sort of tourist place with a river ferry, and an investor wanted a few Motels built to capitalize on the situation. This man approached my dad’s boss to construct the massive project, and my Dad was chosen to basically be the manager and overseer there.

So yeah, my dad’s pretty much ‘the guy’ over there.

Having chilled there for a day or two, the topic of my job came up. Apparently the pay is really good for general construction labourers, and the project does need a few more people. At this time my dad and I spoke, and he wound up giving me a job working at the dig for the rest of the summer. I will basically learn how to operate the machines and help the others dig (and fill) the massive holes which will eventually become the Hotels.

Thus, I will be in Oklahoma City for the rest of the Summer. This also means I wont be returning to Canada until late August, and will be basically working up to 11 hour shifts everyday. The job is tough, and its rough, but the pay is the good, the hours are overbearing, and the sun is amazingly oppressive. I also get weekly meal allowances, and my own motel studio room at a nearby place owned by the investor (with pool and room service, and breakfast, and all that good stuff). I’ll also get to learn how to operate machinery, and will be spending my time with a lot of Spanish speaking peoples- as well as my dad.

I’m excited, and yet oddly detached. I haven’t been away from Canada in ages, and Oklahoma City isn’t exactly the most happening place on earth.

However, I also cant wait to start and earn a lot of money working my ass off in a place I never imagined I would/could.

Wish me the best!

Uzair.

Daily Five

1. Would you rather serve in heaven or rule in hell?
Serve in heaven. I'm not a jerk enough to rule in Hell. Plus, I want to meet my Creator.

2. If you had evidence that would catch a killer, but also put you in jail, would you use it?

Depends on how long i'd go to jail. But being human, I wouldnt use the evidence unless the killer was of the serial sort.

3. If you could work the worst job you have ever had, for three years and then never have to work again, would you or would you rather work the job you always wanted but not be able to retire until well past the age of retirement?
Simple. I'd work the Job I've always wanted. Mainly because i'd die doing something I hated for three years straight.

4. If you could write four newspaper headlines, which would come true, what would they be?
-Waterloo Student Wins Lottery, Cures Cancer
-Time is officially subject to Uzair's whims.
-World votes to eradicate borders, ushers in new era of unity
-World Hunger a thing of the past.

5. A video of children in Florida fighting, while adults cheer on, was posted on the popular web site MySpace, The popularity of "gang videos" has also increased, and there has been renewed interest in re creating the infamous "
Faces of Death" video series, do you feel there should be laws limiting extreme videos?
-Ok the Florida thing, thats just dumb. We all know fun cannot be had until there's some betting involved. xD On a serious note, I believe that there should be no law, however, there should be a general understanding that movies about 'ways to die' are tasteless and desensitising  to viewers, and that death should always be something difficult and painful to comprehend. As one of my mottos say, 'why censor when you can sterlilize?'

My life Lessons (Part 1.)

Uzair’s Life Lessons:

1. Life sucks, and then it swallows.

2. Instant Noodles are a University Student’s best friend (Especially if he’s living off campus)

3. It IS possible to lose sleep over worrying if you’re ‘getting enough sleep’.

4. Extensions are a Professor’s way of saying he/she Loves you.

5. An extension on your paper will always beat sex.

6. Water? What is this water you speak of?

7. Getting coffee from Tim Hortons is like getting yourself a Birthday Present everyday.

8. No, the annoying kid in the back of class wont shut up. Get over it.

9. When people say they want ‘to see the world’, they always mean Western Europe…or Australia.

10. You’d be surprised how easy it is to sleep just about anywhere after starting University.

I hate Fox. I really, honestly do.

So Drive got cancelled.

Another excellent show just pulled from the air and has left me frustrated. Drive is just another ‘x’ next to the long list of brilliant shows already cancelled by Fox: Firefly, Dark Angel, Tru Calling, Wonderfalls, Family Guy, and Futurama. All of these shows were exceptionally well written, well acted (both voice and physical), and had plots and story arcs which were strong, organic, and beautiful. Firefly is perhaps one of my favourite shows of all time, and having only one season of it (and a movie) has left me embittered and upset. I really got into that ‘verse, and it’s the only show that has made me laugh and cry within a span of three minutes (‘The Message’).

It might sound nerdy and geeky, but Firefly actually meant something to me. It thought me a lot about human nature, and its introspective quality made me understand the complexities of different people. And if nothing else, it thought me that ‘When you can't run, you crawl, and when you cant do that, you get someone to carry you there’. Sappy? Yes. But it makes a point about friendship and trust, and about the five or six people in the world you’d carry on your shoulders to the very end.

I guess, in the end, you just become an observer into a show you love. The people become real; as does their pain, triumphs, and challenges. I’m sure anyone can turn to a show they loved with all their heart and see themselves in that alternate universe living that alternate life. Its like, how many of us haven’t wondered what it would be like to be Buffy’s pal (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), or what it would be like to be a Grim Reaper (Dead like Me)? If nothing, I’m sure everyone wondered as a child what it would be like being a Power Ranger or a Sailor Scout.

Likewise, I was really getting into Drive. If the show had developed at the same consistency as the first four episodes, I’m sure I would have been hooked, and wondering what my life would have been like had I been somehow coerced into an illegal cross-country race. However, although I blame FOX for about 90% of the cancellation (and scheduling. New shows should always go after the Flagship show, which in this case was 24), I also blame the show itself.

When I heard Captain Malcolm Reynolds was returning as a driver coerced into an illegal race, I dismissed the show immediately.

And that is what I think really did the show in.

There was no real hook. Sure, cross-country racing sounds fun, but can a TV show pull it off better than a blockbuster movie? There was nothing special or attention grabbing about the idea. If anything, it sounded cheesy, and I excepted the show to turn into a twisted version of Knight Rider (i.e. possibly fun, but lacking depth)- or worse. I wondered what sort of character development could occur with two people in a car (since I assumed they wouldn’t stop around), and how it could possibly capture the nuances of people. There was nothing relatable, nor was there anything fantastic about the premise.

…but the show itself was just….wow.

I was really enjoying it, and things were beginning to get interesting.

But I guess this is all I can really do ( i.e. rant). The show is gone, and I doubt it developed a strong enough Fan Base to ever bring it back. That, and it just never got a chance. In its place, FOX decided a third night of House repeats was necessary. I honestly wonder who is making these decisions.

Also, is it just me, or are shows getting the axe quicker and quicker these days?

This is not an update.

In and out, jumping up and down, and there's no where to stop,
'cause my head spins round and round....
In and out, jumping up and down, and there's no where to stop,
'cause its just like I'm Spellbound...

I think I just ate this song whole.
xD!

p.s.- Its horrible, horrible house dance and probably regulated to Europe....but by Jove its addictive!

The Update

So this is the update.

-I’m back at Waterloo doing the University thing. As of October 20-something-th, I’ll have been doing the University thing now for four and a half semesters. Its scary that time is whipping by so fast, but at the same time, this semester is going oddly slowly. That is a good thing, and I’m glad I’m actually taking the time to stop and get my priorities straight.
-I would love to say I miss the old days when I was in Elementary/High School and when I honestly didn’t have a real care in the world, but I don’t. In fact, I’m tired of thinking about the good old days (wherever they were, and whatever they were). In a way, I’m over everything, and although it does make me feel heartless at times, I’m glad I can let go reminiscing about the past and am actually working towards a future and a present.
-I made a new friend. This makes me exceptionally happy- I think. In fact, through him, I’ve made another friend who is in another class of mine and who is funny and interesting. I love how the chains connect back and forth, and eventually you get to know more people. We spent two whole hours in the SLC discussing Islam, the Middle East, and faith. It was exceptionally fun.
-I miss my parents.
-I’ve been getting less and less sleep, and its beginning to show. Today, after class, someone mentioned how completely wrecked I look. This is not a good thing, but it really ups my broody dark looks. I can also now death stare people and look like I don’t take bull-shit- from anyone. This is a development of great potential.
-Apparently, I have this gift for humour. That, or I’m seriously starting to believe in myself more. Take your pick.
-I need to do something nice for someone. Its been irritating me how indifferent I can be to people.
-People from Finland are awesome. Especially ones who looks like Vikings. Even more so those Viking ones who take Religious Studies.
-My Archaeology professor is leading a Dig in Albania this summer. She says she will take a few students with her. I don’t want to get my hopes up, but I really want to do this. Its been a child/teenage/adulthood dream of mine and I want to see it fulfilled. Plus, I can say a few things in Albanian.
-Said Prof. is also offering an Osteo-Archaeology (Bone Archaeology) class next semester. It’s a Lab class and we’ll do a lot of hands on work. The one problem right now is that the class is full (it had a quota of 14), so I need to beg her to let me take it. Its something ive been fascinated with, and since Physical Anthropology is shaping up to be my specialization, I really, really need this class.
-I’m becoming a Lawyer. It sounds weird when contrasted with the last section, but if I can somehow mix Anthropology with Law (like for Aboriginal Rights, Law with regards to Cultures, Archaeology, or even Forensics law), I will be happy. Most Law Schools don’t need a Pre-Law degree so it doesn’t matter anyway.

That’s about it.
I hope you all are safe and happy, and all that jazz.
Uzair.

Ok. WHY is this making me sad?

I got this off of facebook, and if ANY OF YOU ever grew up in the 90s, this will rekindle old and fond memories (well, if you're north american). If it doesnt make you nostalgic and sappy, nothing else will.

You're a 90's kid if:

You've ever ended a sentence with the word "PSYCHE!"

You can sing the rap to "The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air"

You remember when Kurt Cobain, Tu Pac, River Phoenix, and Selena died.

You know that "WOAH" comes from Joey from "Blossom" and that "How Rude!" comes from Stephanie from "Full House"

You remember when it was actually worth getting up early
on a Saturday to watch cartoons.

You got super excited when it was Oregon Trail day in computer class at school.

You remember reading "Goosebumps"

You know the profound meaning of "Wax on, wax off"

You have pondered why Smurfette was the only female smurf.

You took plastic cartoon lunch boxes to school.

You danced to "Wannabe" by the Spice Girls, Females: had a new motto, Males: got a whole lot gay-er. (so tell me what you want, what you really really want.)

You remember the craze, then the banning of slap bracelets and slam books.

You still get the urge to say "NOT" after (almost) every sentence...Not...

Where in the world is Carmen San Diego? was both a game and a TV game show.

Captain Planet.

You knew that Kimberly, the pink ranger, and Tommy, the green Ranger were meant to be together.

When playing power rangers with friends you fought over who got to be who............and still all ended up being Tommy.

You remember when super nintendo's became popular.

You remember watching home alone 1, 2 , and 3........and tried to pull the pranks on "intruders"

"I've fallen and I can't get up"

You remember going to the skating rink before there were inline skates

Two words... Trapper Keeper.

You never got injured on a Slip 'n' Slide

You wore socks over leggings scrunched down

"Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack, all dressed in black, black, black, with silver buttons, buttons, buttons, all down her back, back, back" SHE ASKED HER MOTHER MOTHER MOTHER FOR FIFTY CENTS CENTS CENTS TO SEE THE ELEPHANTS PHANTS PHANTS JUMP OVER THE FENCE THE FENCE THE FENCE
he jumped so high high high he touched the sky sky sky and he didnt come back back back til the forth of july ly ly he jumped so low ow ow he stubbed his toe toe toe and thats the end end end of the elephants show show show

You remember boom boxes vs. cd players

You remember New Kids on The Block when they were cool

You knew all the characters names and their life stories on "Saved By The Bell"

You played and/or collected "Pogs"

You had at least one Tamagotchi, GigaPet or Nano and brought it everywhere

You watched the original Care Bears, My Little Pony, and Ninja Turtles

NANCY DREW AND THE HARDY BOYS WERE THE BEST MYSTERY BOOKS

Yikes pencils and erasers were the stuff!

All your school supplies were "Lisa Frank" brand.(pencils.notebooks.b
inders.etc.)

You remember when the new Beanie Babies were always sold out.

You remember a time before the WB.

You've gotten creeped out by "Are You Afraid of the Dark?"

You know the Macarena by heart.

"Talk to the hand" ... enough said

You thought Brain woud finally take over the world

You always said, "Then why don't you marry it!"

When $5 seemed like a million, & another dollar a miracle.

When you begged to go to McDonalds for dinner everyday.

When Toys R Us overuled the mall.

Go back to the time when:

Decisions were made by going 'eeny-meeny-miney-moe'.

Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming 'do over!'

'Race issue' ment arguing about who ran the fastest.

Money issues were handled by whoever was banker in 'Monopoly.'

It wasn't odd to have two or three 'best' friends.

Being old referred to anyone over 20.

A chance to skate as a couple at the local roller rink was like winning the lottery.

Scrapes & bruises were kissed & made better.

It was a big deal to finally be tall enought to ride the 'big people' rides at the fair.

When playing Nintendo was the hardest thing ever.

When Ninja Turtles ruled the world.

Another Baby Sitter Club and Little Sister (Karen) book came out and you put your name on hold for it at the library.

When Aladdin was new, before the trilogy was complete.

Before we realized all this would eventually disappear

Who would have thought you'd miss the 90's so much!!!!!
